US anti-abortionist executed
In a last statement before his execution, Hill thanked God for his family and urged anyone against abortion to do what they could to prevent it. “Two of the last things that I would like to say - if you believe abortion is a lethal force, you should oppose the force and do what you have to to stop it. May God help you to protect the unborn as you would want them to be protected.” Among the hundred demonstrators who gathered outside Florida’s Starke Prison, many hailed the former Presbyterian minister and father of three as a hero. At the time of Hill’s death, they stood and held hands. Many carried placards proclaiming that he is now a martyr for his cause.
Before the execution, Hill said he would kill again to save the unborn and was looking forward to dying for his cause. “I believe the state, by executing me, will be making me a martyr,” he told a news conference.
Hill was convicted of murdering Dr John Britton and his driver James Barrett outside the Ladies Center in Pensacola, Florida, in 1994. Hill gave himself up to police, saying that he had carried out the killings to prevent “innocent babies” being killed.

Bali bomber sentenced to death
The man who became known as the “smiling bomber” for his part in the Bali bombings last year, has been sentenced to death by firing squad. Amrozi bin Nurhasyim was found guilty of conspiring, planning and carrying out an act of terrorism, which killed 202 people. He smiled when the guilty verdict was read out and turned around to the courtroom and gave the thumbs-up sign when the judge handed down the death sentence.
“Amrozi has been legally and convincingly proven guilty of terrorism,” said Chief Judge I Made Karna. But his final words were almost drowned out by cheers and applause from the relatives and survivors of the bombings.He said Amrozi was sorry for the deaths of those people who were not targets. “He doesn’t have anything personal against the Australians, for instance. The targets were the Americans and the Jews.”
Amrozi, one of three brothers arrested in connection with the Bali operation, was charged after he admitted buying the explosives and the minivan used in the blasts. Police said the bombings were planned by Jemaah Islamiah (JI), a militant Muslim group which wants to overthrow the Indonesian Government and set up a Muslim alternative across south-east Asia.During his trial, which began in May, Amrozi said the Bali bombings had “positive aspects” because they encouraged people to re-embrace religion and weakened the corrupting influence of foreign tourists.
Amrozi has said he is not worried about the death penalty. “I’ll be happy to die a martyr,” he said recently. “After me there will be a million more Amrozis.”
You connect the dots. Both convicted murderers. Both doing what they perceive to be their God’s will. Both happy to die martyrs for their cause. Both expecting rewards in some afterlife.

If Paul Hill was nothing more than an anti-abortion activist, then Amrozi is nothing more than an anti-American/anti-Semitic activist. Goose. Gander. Is Bush and his thought police investigating the morons who prayed and picketed in support of this nutbag’s actions for possible terrorist links? Why not throw them in Camp X-Ray on suspicion? Better to be safe than sorry, right? Nah, he probably secretly harbours sympathy for Hill’s actions as well. The hypocrite.
In other news, Powell pushes new UN Iraq role. “We are asking the international community to join us,” he told reporters. In other words, “The steadily growing US and UK armed forces death toll from our self-induced quagmire is starting to affect our opinion polls. We need a fresh injection of international cannon fodder to help spread the casualty rate around.” I sincerely hope Kofi Annan makes Powell get on all fours and bark like a dog for an hour or two while he thinks about it. Or, better yet, flat out tells him to go fuck himself. You’ve made your bed, chump. Now lie in it.
