Airport Terror In The Murdoch Press, Again?

from The Sunday Mail, 8th August 2004.

A massive two-page spread, emblazoned with two large photos; one of a WTC tower being struck, and the other a still from the notorious footage of Mohammed Atta going through the Boston airport metal detectors.

Can We Stop Them?

As Annie Jacobsen took her seat on a plane she noticed a group of Middle Eastern men. At first she tried to ignore them. Then they started to act suspiciously…

Annie Jacobson… Annie Jacobson… why does that name sound so familiar? Nevermind, keep reading.

He walked down the aisle to the back of the plane, still holding the bag. When he passed two of the men sitting mid-cabin, he gave the thumbs up sign. When he returned to his seat he no longer had the bag. Watching their unusual glances, observing their bizarre activities, watching them congregate in small groups, knowing that the flight attendants and the pilots were seriously concerned, and now knowing that federal air marshals were on board, I was officially terrified.

No, it couldn’t be. Surely not. It is!! It’s the syndication of this fear-mongering crap-fest of an article Jacobson wrote for Women’s Wall Street, and which, in a matter of days, was debunked as the hysterical rantings of a paranoid bigot who had the misfortune of sharing an international flight with a group of Syrian musicians. That was in mid-July. Less than a month later, News Corp’s Sunday Mail are attempting to breathe life into a stillborn story for their unresearching readers to accept at face value, what next terror at Boston airport’s parking lot because of theoretical, but highly unlikely risks. I’d like to believe that those in charge were simply unaware of the non-existent basis for the syndicated article, but I doubt even Murdoch editors could be that ignorant. Just keep dishing out the lukewarm slabs of pulse-racing, frothy-mouthed terror-fiction at the airport and leave them gagging for more.
