Still think this is all some altruistic crusade to defend the “sacred” institution of marriage, that great “building block of society”? (I just assumed that equality and justice were exponentially more important to the function of a free society, but what do I know?) Time for a reality check. From the American Food and Drug Administration’s guidelines for tissue donation. What’s the number one screening criterion? Use of intravenous drugs such as heroin? Nope, that’s #2. Suspected HIV/AIDS? #6. Jail inmates? #8. History of viral hepatitis? #11. No, the number one condition which renders a potential sperm/tissue donor ineligible is… (I feel like David Letterman)… *drumroll*
1. men who have had sex with another man in the preceding five years
Well, it can’t be to limit the perpetuation of a “gay gene”; they don’t believe such a thing exists (neither do I, but I don’t expect the God Hates Fags set to possess the required mental faculties to differentiate between naked gene determinism and in utero environmental biochemical factors)*. It can’t be the tired old 80′s cliche of homosexual partners being intrinsically more prone to STD transmission. They don’t even have the decency to specify “unprotected sex”, which would be fair enough, just as it would equally for a heterosexual donor. What’s left? Pure, unadulterated double-standards in action. So the next time you look at the proposed Gay Marriage Amendment, and think to yourself “Hey, that would make homosexuals second class citizens!”, take a step back and give yourself an uppercut. They already ARE second class citizens in a society poisoned by customs of arbitrary, religious-based, pseudo-moralistic coercion which is, and will always remain, mutually exclusive to the principles of a true egalitarian democracy. God Bless America!
* Sorry, that was a low blow. Sourcing family.org on societal matters is analogous to sourcing Mein Kampf on Jewish culture.
*edit* Brent has drawn my attention to a piece of modern literary art entitled “Was God wrong?” by Town Hall (I know, another easy target) columnist Rebecca Hagelin, noted for such archival gems as “Why Christmas?” and “Sean Hannity Is The Real Deal”. I was so moved by her succinct exposition of rational enquiry that I just had to contact her and relay my admiration.
Dear Ms Hagelin,
I just had to congratulate you on your excellent column. I logon first thing every morning and eagerly devour the words of wisdom of you and your colleagues. As an avid student of history, I’ve often wondered what it was like to live in the early 1950′s. I’ve found that your column is the perfect source for inspiration in this regard.
God Bless!
The sad thing is, she’ll probably take that as a compliment. In between taking open-handed blows to the pumpkin for not having her husband’s goddamned dinner ready on time.
