Record price for car registration plate
A County Fermanagh businessman has paid more than £50,000 for a car registration plate.
The plate, WIL 1, reached the Northern Ireland record price of £40,000 at an auction near Belfast on Wednesday.
The man also paid an extra £12,000 in VAT and other fees on top at the Cherished Registration Auction at Wilsons Auctions in Mallusk.
OIL 1 was the previous most expensive plate bought in Northern Ireland, going for £25,000.
Bidding was estimated to go over £20,000, as BIL 1 had reached £22,000 at a recent sale, but auctioneer Ian Wilson was still surprised at the final price.
…
Although spending such a sum of money on a personalised registration plate may seem like the ultimate exercise in vanity, the successful bidder wished to remain anonymous.
… other expensive plates including ANZ 1 (£6,000), FIL 3 (£5,500) and WIL SO17 (£5,400).
WIL 777 only reached £7,000.
WOW, that is just daft spending over £50,000 (over $90,000 USD!) for one personalised car registration plate! I was looking on Google at online personalised car number plates auctions and it looks like big business.
I wonder if my random number plate ending in ELB is worth anything, anyone with the name Elmer Leonard Brown or Elsa Lisa Brown feel free to put in the first bids, we are starting at £25,000 (VAT free though :-))
